We’ve all done those patrol missions that have you make your way through Sector Space from one star system to another. In each system you may face different enemies, or simply scan a few rocks and call it a day. Attempting to set up such a mission using the Foundry requires some tricky manipulations of map transitions, something I hope to explain and explore here.
As many of you know by now, the Foundry allows two types of map transitions. Those would be the Initial Map Transition that allows the author to select a map entry-door from Sector Space, and all other map transitions.
The big difference between these two types of transitions is that the Foundry Editor insists on allowing us only one Initial Map Transition unless we build our mission in a very specific way. First, we’ll prepare three space maps, each with a single Anomaly that the player should scan. Open up the Map tab and set up the three maps so they look something like this:
Once you’ve set up the three system maps, switch to the Story tab and an Interact With Object objective. The Foundry Editor should contain something like this:
Don’t worry about filling in anything just yet and instead click and drag another Interact With Object objective straight on top of the first objective like the following image demonstrates:
Repeat the procedure until you have three Interact With Object objective sitting in a nice big Complete All box! You’re now ready to start filling in the blanks.
Click on the ellipse buttons beside the Object selection field, and select the Anomaly from the ‘Space 1‘ map. An Initial Map Transition box will appear and in it, click on the Leave from ellipse button and select Andoria System from the Sirius Sector Block. If you performed this step correctly, you should see something like this:
Proceed to set up the second Interact With Object objective just like you did the first, but this time select the Anomaly from the ‘Space 2‘ map. Another Initial Map Transition box will appear next to the first and in it, click on the Leave from ellipse button and select Vulcan System from the Sirius Sector Block. Set up the third objective the Anomaly from the ‘Space 3‘ map and the transition for the Kei System in the Sirius Sector Block.
You can now add more bells and whistles to your mission, just be careful to add objectives under the objectives you lumped together in the Complete All box and remember which objective is the root for which Star System!
