I opened my Starbase UGC account last year while two-thirds of the way through my epic six-part Federation mission series Ghosts of War, intent upon blogging about the series as I continued to write it. That was nine months ago. Alas, I was too busy in the Foundry, in STO and in RL to devote much time to blogging about my series. Well, now that I’ve completed the series, I figured it was high time I started promoting and discussing it. So… here I am.

I wrote the six missions in this series over the past eighteen months or so, with frequent updates and improvements to each one along the way. I will give you more of a behind-the-scenes look at what went into making this series in the weeks and months ahead. For now though, I’ll start with just the basic facts on each mission in the series:

“Ghosts of War, Part I” (aka “Dust to Dust”)
Mission ID: ST-HBPDJHGFE
Author: @NCC-89471
Faction: Federation
Level restriction: 16+
Duration: 30-45 minutes
Combat: Ground and Space
Summary: The unthinkable has happened: A thalaron weapon has been used on a planetary scale, sparking a new crisis for the Federation. Who is behind the attack, and can they be stopped before striking again?

“Ghosts of War, Part II” (aka “Extraordinary Rendition”)
Designed for small craft
Mission ID: ST-HI6PMJ2Y8
Author: @NCC-89471
Faction: Federation
Level restriction: 31+
Duration: 45-60 minutes
Combat: Ground and Space
Summary: To prevent a thalaron attack against the Federation, you must find and capture a rogue Romulan senator – by any means necessary. But the weapon may not be the only secret he holds…

“Ghosts of War, Part III” (aka “Chasing Ghosts”)
Mission ID: ST-HLAJXIZUN
Author: @NCC-89471
Faction: Federation
Level restriction: 35+
Duration: 30-45 minutes
Combat: Ground and Space
Summary: An unknown adversary blazes a trail of mayhem across the Alpha Quadrant aboard a hijacked Starfleet escort – leading to a revelation that could drastically shift the quadrant’s balance of power.

“Ghosts of War, Part IV” (aka “The Portal”)
Mission ID: ST-HFDLKG5XV
Author: @NCC-89471
Faction: Federation
Level restriction: 35+
Duration: 45-60 minutes
Combat: Ground and Space
Summary: From the cold ashes of the Dominion War, a dark, unholy alliance has risen. To uncover their intentions, you must learn the secret of a mysterious gateway deep behind enemy lines…

“Ghosts of War, Part V” (aka “Battleground 001″)
Mission ID: ST-HDISRTVDK
Author: @NCC-89471
Faction: Federation
Level restriction: 35+
Duration: 60-90 minutes
Combat: Ground and Space
Summary: You must lead the defense of Earth against an audacious decapitation strike by the enemy alliance. Will the Federation’s darkest hour since the Dominion War be its finest – or its last?

“Ghosts of War, Part VI” (aka “Time’s Hammer”)
Mission ID: ST-HB3UDU2GK
Author: @NCC-89471
Faction: Federation
Level restriction: 35+
Duration: 45-60 minutes
Combat: Ground
Summary: To remove the enemy threat once and for all, you must pursue them across space… and time. The Ghosts of War saga comes to an unforgettable conclusion – thousands of years before it began.

Some recent experiences got me thinking about “Drive-by’s” …those pernicious “1″ votes that people get on their missions. Now it must be said that “Drive-by” ratings are like blackholes, every sector has at least one, and while they all stink…they happen nonetheless, or as they say on Vulcan, “You can please some of the people some of the time, but not all the people all the time.”

Plus some people are just obnoxious Tellarites.

Anyway, this brought me to examine the 1 votes of the Spotlight and Top 32 missions to determine what mission creators should reasonably expect from the dreaded “Drive-by” ratings.

Below I’ll use the following nomenclature:
“O” = Number of One (1) votes for a mission
“P” = Number of Plays for a mission (minimum of 10)
“OP” = Ratio of O per P, a higher OP is better than a low OP.

First, the FED side.

FED Spotlight Missions had an average O of 236 over an average of 9951 P, for an OP of 42.
The Top 32 FED Missions had an average O of 18 over an average of 1068 P, for an OP of 59.
The combined averages were O/P/OP 127/5510/43.

The mean OP for Spotlight missions was 43 with a standard deviation of 16.
The mean OP for Top32 missions was 48 with a standard deviation of 25.

If the scores are normally distributed, approx. 68% of the population of missions will fall within 1 standard deviation of the mean, and 95% of the population within 2 standard deviations.

This allows us to class the OP ratings of the two categories of FED missions (Top32/Spotlight…they cannot be evaluated directly because they are effectively to different samples, the Spotlight missions obviously receiving far more “attention” per mission)

For non-spotlight FED missions, if your mission has an OP within the bounds of 23 to 73, you are receiving a normal amount of Drive-By ratings. If you are below 23 you are receiving a higher than normal amount and if your OP lands between 74 and 98 you are doing well above average. If you are above 98 you can safely consider your mission a resounding success with the player base.

By comparison, FED Spotlight missions are clearly held to a higher standard by the player base. The lower end of average is fairly equitable with non-spotlight missions, but the upper band is significantly lower, for a range of 27 to 59. Additionally, the data is tight enough that a “well below average” band comes into existence with OP’s of 11 or lower. The well above average band for Spotlight missions sits between 59 and 75, but interestingly enough none of the existing Spotlight missions falls within the outer most “excellent” band above 75.

You can really see how much harsher the upper band is if you find the differences between the Top32 and Spotlight missions for each band:

Top32-Spotlight = Differences
98-75 = 23 points
73-59 = 14 points
48-43 = 5 points
23-27 = 4 points
0-11 = 11 points

These differences will become more interesting as we move on to the Klingon side of the missions.

Mak'tar Prime

  • Author:: zensoji1
  • Project ID:: ST-HASQD2BM5
  • Allegience:: Federation
  • Level:: Any Level
  • Starting Location:: Kelvani Belt, Orellius Sector Block

The Mak’tar Induction mission is an introduction to the federation fleet “The Mak’Tar” It goes through a considerable amount of information on how the fleet operates, our sense of humour and background of the fleet, namely the fact that we are loosely based on the 1999 Star Trek and Sci-Fi parody – Galaxy Quest. Numerous references are made to this and a variety of in-jokes within the fleet that you grow to understand.

Considering the size of the mission, the sheer number of objects and the anmount of triggers involved, this mission is currently in a Beta stage of development so baring that in mind when writing reviews would be helpful. Any bugs found can be sent to zensoji@gmail.com or to @zensoji1 in-game.

  • Mission Title:: Mak’tar Missions: Episode I-I
  • Author:: zensoji1
  • Project ID:: ST-HJPJ6B6KJ
  • Allegience:: Federation
  • Level:: 35+
  • Starting Location:: Starfleet Acadamy – Southernmost Office Door

The Mak’tar Missions are a series of missions that build on the story foundation of The Mak’tar Induction mission. They expand on the already established fleet members and the custom locations you already visited.

Episode I of the the Mak’tar Missions is set in 3 parts. All three tell of a betrayal within the the NSEA and the Mak’tar, the effects it has, the final revelation of the Mak’tar to the rest of the quadrant and the resulting war.

In part I you are given your regular monthly fleet assignment by Admiral T’Pul – to assist in the maintenance of the Mak’tar’s Communications Satellite. What you discover is an informant and a plot that has been in motion for over half a decade.

You are ordered to give up command of your ship to a Ferengi captain in order to help complete
a delicate mission
for the Ferengi Alliance. Your orders come from the President, himself.
