A constant battle these cables are! This week, Nem bows out, but guest host Gettysburg7 rules the show with his naughty G and T Show ways! Two pieces of Foundry news dropped this week (to a resounding thud with my other cohosts), but there was no shortage of thoughts on the newly revealed Ferasans!

Also, Borticus and Gozer say some things that get them in trouble. We explore (or at least try to explore), those topics and what went wrong!

In this week’s “Founder Spotlight,” we sat down with the (in)famous Havraha.  Grab a drink for this interview and enjoy!

Q:  You are the author of To Helna and Back, Rema Donna, Time the Enemy, Time the Ally, and Animations With Helna. What inspired you to create these missions?  Is there one that you are most proud of?  Will we see any more sequels?

What inspired me to do each mission varied wildly from one to the other. “To Helna and Back” was my first Foundry mission and I suppose the one I’m most proud of simply because I consider it a flagship mission. I wanted to reintroduce a tried and true Star Trek episode plot, the classic “a bridge officer has been abducted!” episode, into STO for no other reason than “it hasn’t been done yet”. And the reason why was painfully clear: because Kestrel had no way of knowing anything personal about the player’s bridge officers, it’s pretty much impossible to write a story focused around them. My solution to the problem was an obvious one: invent an officer that belongs to the player. That way, they could take ownership of the character but you could control the background and actions without the player feeling encroached upon. This officer ended up being “Helna”, a Rigelian stellar cartographer. Of course, since then, Cryptic has gotten more bold in their willingness to invent new characters and make them leading drivers of episode plots (Obisek, Eraun, Loriss, what have you), but at the time To Helna and Back was written, I believe it was not only unique in the Foundry but also unique to the game. Nowadays its probably lost its luster, since not only has Cryptic made episodes that were character focused, but Helna is just one of dozens upon dozens of Foundry-created characters, recurring, that are driving the plots of missions. One of my favorites is Tat, from many of Nagorak’s missions. That Ferengi is going to get herself killed one of these days!

Of course I’m really proud of “Rema Donna” too, which so far has a higher rating than To Helna and Back, probably because it addresses a mission that many players took offense to, which was called “Divide Et Impera”. I think players might find it interesting that the original inspiration for the mission was “I like Romulans. I like Gorn. Hmm. You don’t see Romulans and Gorn fight very much …” and so I made it. But it just goes to show how missions can evolve as you work on them and find a bigger meaning. Don’t be afraid to retcon (retroactive-continuity) what you’ve already written! It’s almost always better for it.

I apologize for lag between me and Terry/Bob this week, guys. These cables prove they come with growing pains.

Too much stuff went down on the podcast this week for me to even keep track of. Because of this, we had a super long episode! We talk about everything from new additions, our thoughts on free lobi crystals, whether MACOS should be in STO, and Terry takes up the entire second hour of the show with her own topics, like STO story being shoved into Star Trek Magazine instead of the game, and Dayton Ward’s opinion on when a fan fiction ceases to be a fan fiction. I honestly can’t keep up with it all. Its soooo good. So I’ll add show notes later on as I relisten to it myself. For now, ENJOY!

Brandon Felczer, better known as PWE_BranFlakes on the forums and community manager for Star Trek Online, dropped in this episode to give us some breaking news on The Foundry, and it’s seriously awesome! We can’t wait for you to hear! At the same time we kind of feel bad because the rest of the episode is certainly not as happy pitched as the beginning: indeed, we had some scathing critiques of both the state of bugs within Foundry missions in the game and the lackluster design decisions that are haunting us. I’ll be honest here.

We like Obisek. We do not like timed events. If force Obisek into a Timed Event we hate, we rage. No if ands or buts about it.

And although there isn’t any mission reviews tonight (we save that for next week), we decide to mix it up by asking YOU to play and review The Mayns of Balnar Moon for next week, and send us the review you left the author to our email address! Let’s see what you think!

You THINK this is a rage filled episode. You would be wrong. We were very very analytical this episode. I like to think the big thing that makes our show our show, is that no matter what, we will face the topics head on and discuss them in full. Podcast UGC is a show where each host is able, and does, practice its own opinions about a range of topics and expresses those opinions freely. For this reason we dive head on into ALL the controversy of this week surrounding STO. But we try to stay level headed about it.

Please forward all your opinions and complaints of personal dissatisfaction with my conduct and our show to podcastugc@starbaseugc.com where I will proceed to ignore it like I’ve done the entire mailbag for the past 2 weeks plzkthxbye.

So finally I got off my lazy butt and set up the rendering options to render the show in the highest quality with the best variable bit rate. I hope you guys notice, it will either sound great or awful. One way or another though, it shaved 60 MB off the mp3 size.

Bob returns because, well, he can again. A very popular thread by Kirkfat argues that STO’s story is bad (including an All Things Trek podcast). We defend it! Bob discovers something about STO. We go over the Ask Cryptic Foundry bits, rant on Neverwinter (or more specifically how AWESOME it looks), First Contact Day celebrations, a Review of Alpha, some Foundry contests going on, and of course I and Terry completely argue past one another about the Foundry mission we reviewed. All and all, a complete episode.

QUA’PLA! It is Klingon Awareness Week, and therefor we are keenly aware of Klingons! We have Bob on because we can. We read a very kind and considerate letter from Captain Geko about the Mining Event being broken for KDF (and mock Nem for freakin’ out about it because this is like the first time we’ve EVER got the chance to do so). We also talk about how WE would fill up the Klingon faction. We try to get Terry to spoil “Alpha” for us, but she doesn’t bite. We also talk about how Territory Control with the KDF and Fed might be superior end game content, including PVE content, than what STO already has. And of course, we review Klingon Foundry missions! At least the ones we can.

So while Terilynn was down in Los Gatos checking out top secret Cryptic stuff of which I’m absolutely jealous over, this left NemesisChiken and I to do the podcast ourselves. When RSA showed up, I jumped at the chance to have them on the show, but I now realize how much of a mistake that might have been. This is, indeed, the most inappropriate episode of Podcast UGC there will probably ever be. And because its short, and because I am, as All Things Trek call me, a “glutton for punishment”, I went ahead and did something I’ve never done before: I left the preshow on the final MP3. So people who download us only and never tune in live now get a chance to hear what we do before we start up the show. However, keep in mind, that also means I had to do one other first for the show: not simply cut out cuss words, but literally bleep them out! Yikes!

An early delivery this week! I know, who would have thunk it? I’m trying a new way of editing the files together … so everything may be softer in volume, but hopefully I’m a bit clearer in the recording. I’d love feedback about this fact!

This week, first and foremost, we hit on the new Featured Episode called Facility 90210, or something. While many podcasts have sang its praises, unfortunately, all three of us not only don’t have positive things to say. We rip it a new one. We literally tear just about every part about it to absolute shreds, and for good reasons, and for reasons that deal with THE FOUNDRY! Enjoy that. It’s really a work of art being played to your ears.

We also cover a lot of cool news that landed on all those OTHER podcasts (but not ours, apparently), and Terry and Nem review a Foundry mission actually created by a Cryptic developer. Hold on to your pants. Yes, we’re talking to you Cohas.

With the help of the Foundry Conference Call, we actually have a very meaty show about the Foundry this week! We’d also like to thank “All Things Trek Podcast” host Bob Collins for appearing on the show and adding a unique perspective to a lot of Star Trekkian things, including our sandbox topic! Podcast UGC was interviewed by All Things Trek. It’s a big long episode! It’s full of all kind of questions about how we started our podcast, how we got started in Star Trek, questions about the Foundry, and of course all kinds of arguments about Star Trek.

I guess I wasn’t exactly sure when people wanted this to be released so … what better time than now!?

Here is the … pretty much unedited version of the second Foundry conference call. This call focused on upcoming features planned for the Foundry (yeah, I know, I wasn’t sure such a thing existed either). That includes Foundry Featured Episodes and a new UI overhaul as mentioned by dStahl in the Priority One interview. People participating in the conference call included:

Grumpy Old Bastard
Irish Darkshadow
Nagorak
Altexist
Rachel Garrett
Woody Valley

So while this was supposed to be our 1 year anniversary episode complete with video as a vodcast, the curse of Podcast OMG reared its ugly head and ruined everything. The ONE TIME we actually needed the game to be up and online during our podcast live timeslot, Cryptic’s servers crash for hours, insuring our dream of a 1 year anniversary vodcast were shattered and dashed upon the rocks. How could you, Cryptic? How could you?

On top of that, Pamela randomly stopped recording, probably because someone tried to call us during the podcast, which resulted in us pretty much losing the first hour and 30 minutes of the show. With Terry not recording her typical backup, our last resort was the Trek Radio backup which, as you will hear, is not exactly the best quality recording. Happily, the second half of the show after the break returns to typical show sound.

This is also probably our most unorganized podcast, because we ran entirely without show notes and it took us 45 minutes AFTER our typical start time to get the vodcast working, for it to promptly end because Cryptic couldn’t keep the damn server afloat. Can you tell I’m bitter? Yeah, I’m bitter.

And no mission to review, either! We were going to run one live! Not now. Nope. So join us for our angry Podcast UGC 1 Year Anniversary, everyone! It’ll be a HOOT.
